How does Edie navigate the modern and postmodern?

She does not. She transcends questions of modernity and postmodernity through cinema.

But what's wrong with the modern?

Modernists have opinions and agendas. Both are to be feared. Modernists want the world to be run their way. They parlay their personal emotional traumas into the mechanized murder of millions. With a mouthful of psychology and a fistful of capital, they go to horrifying ends to "erect" their horrifying, phallocentric utopias. Modernity is the oil with which the Hitlers, Stalins, W. Bushes and Bin-Ladens of our planet grease their killing machines. Worse than this, the modern program is dreadfully boring.

Sigmund Freud: modernist bore.

Think about the last time you talked politics at a cocktail party. Wouldn't you rather have been talking about the how you wept when E.T flew home?

E.T.: never meangingless or bad.
